APE / Monkey's Audio in Audio ConversionWhat?Monkey's Audio, using the file extension of *.APE is a neat lossless audio format, that rivals FLAC. Whilst it achieves slightly better compression (55% compared to 58% in FLAC), it has a slower encoder and due to design decisions is hard to implement on hardware decoders. It also has no error protection and a damaged file cannot have audio read from beyond the break. Despite this, it has a good community and is suitable for archiving a lot of material where the bulk of plain WAV files would be too much. The codec is not opensource though and has a license protecting it, making it inherently Windows only. However, a license-breaking port of the codec has seen Monkey's Audio encoded on mac and linux. You can find out more on the Monkey's Audio homepage. File extension:*.ape Conversion? With our freeware Spark Audio Converter you can convert to and from APE / Monkey's Audio quickly and easily.
