FLAC in Audio Conversion

What?

FLAC, or Free Lossless Audio Codec, is a semi-popular format for converting high quality audio into - it is lossless which means that converting into FLAC loses absolutely no quality. Contrast this with mp3, ogg and other smaller music formats, which do lose quality to make smaller files. FLAC is a good format for storing sounds in if you are editing music, as it will save you disk space without sacrificing quality.

The FLAC format is based upon a specially built compression algorithm and can store files of most popular bitrate formats and sampling rates. It is adapted for audio files as waveforms have specific shapes, and as of such it can reduce filesizes by 30 to 50%; contrast this with the 10 to 20% you will find with unspecialised compression algorithms.
