MP3 in Audio ConversionWhat?MP3, or Mpeg-1 Audio Layer 3, is a very popular music-based format, lossy but used worldwide. It has a good sound quality relative to its size but it does lose some sound data and introduce extra 'artifacts'. Whilst at its highest bitrate of 320kbps the sound artifacts are basically impercievable by the average human ear, if you encoded the same music one thousand times in and out of mp3 you would notice it. Thus, if you want to store samples without quality deterioration use a lossless codec such as FLAC. MP3 is not the best lossy music format around, as OGG [vorbis] does beat it, but it is the most popular. Its wide support by both software players and even very small hardware mp3 players means it has become a well used format. Most streaming internet radio is even encoded in mp3, but there are licensing issues in the USA and Japan. Thomson owns a patent over the technology which it actively enforces. For an opensource, license-free alternative that has a better encoder anyhow, try OGG.
